Bailey Manor

Set along the shores of Oyster Bay, Long Island, Bailey Manor is a sprawling estate built in 1922 by Thomas Harrison Bailey III. The mansion was built to house Bailey’s large collection of souvenirs from his globetrotting adventures, as well as house his niece, Eleanor. The building itself has two floors above ground and a lower floor below. A large swimming pool is located behind the main house, and a pathway leads down to the seaplane dock on the bay.

The house has many amenities, including a fabulously stocked library, an exercise room, a ballroom, a multi-car garage, and even a small movie theater. Bailey employs five servants at the house: George Fenway, the butler; Celia Briggs, the cook; Bedelia Nash, head housemaid; Geneve Smith, housemaid; and Fernando Lopez, the gardener. George, Celia, and Bedelia have rooms in the service hall on the second floor, while the rest commute to work. Bailey does not have a driver on retainer at present time.

Points of Interest – First Floor:

  • The Library – Thomas Harrison Bailey is a very erudite man, and has a vast collection of books on many subjects, including a few quite esoteric. Characters gain a bonus die when making History, Library Use, or Occult rolls using the library’s resources.
  • Garage Storage – this area houses a full mechanic’s tool shop, including resources to build, modify, or repair any of the vehicles in either of the two main garages. Characters gain a bonus die when making a Mechanical Repair or Electrical Repair roll while using the garage resources.
  • Two-Car Garage – two vehicles are usually parked here, a red 1936 Pontiac Eight convertible and a cream colored 1935 Buick Roadmaster that can easily fit six.
  • Three-Car Garage – only two of these slots are taken up, one by a white 1930 Cadillac V16 Phaeton, and the other by a black satin 1929 Duesenberg Model J.
  • The kitchen is always available, but Celia may or may not be in residence. She cooks breakfast, lunch, and dinner for residents and guests, and can also be requested to make snacks as needed.

Points of Interest – Second Floor:

  • Thomas Bailey occupies the Master Bedroom. His niece, Eleanor, lives in Bedroom 4. Her friend, Iris, often stays in Bedroom 3.
  • Service Quarters – the large service quarters room is shared by Celia Briggs and Bedelia Nash. The single bedroom is occupied by the butler, George.
  • Bedelia and Geneve clean the bedrooms daily, make the beds, and provide clean linens. They will also wash clothing left in the hampers and otherwise maintain quarters for the residents of the manor. Bedelia also makes sure to put fresh flowers in the vases in the halls and rooms every few days. In winter, she decorates the house in pines and firs.
  • Each of the bedrooms have their own locks and keys. Only Thomas and Bedelia have master keys that will open any room.

Points of Interest – Lower Level:

  • Exercise Room – filled with medicine balls, gymnast rings, weights, and other devices.
  • Massage Room – this room has three tables set up to provide massages, though no masseuse is on retainer.
  • Kitchen – there is a small auxiliary kitchen in the lower level. Celia ensures it is well stocked for those who want snacks or light meals.
  • Recreation Room 2 – this room contains several arcade machines – Baffle Ball, Ballyhoo, and even the newer electronic Contact pinball game. There is a foosball table, and two billiards tables. There is also a dart board and a mini-shuffleboard table.
  • Movie Theater – this fifteen seat theater contains a 35mm projector and sound system. There is also a smaller 16mm projector for older silent films, and Thomas has a small library of films from his exploits saved in tin cans.
  • Wine Cellar – Thomas has an excellent selection of wines, but is not a particularly enthusiastic collector, preferring to line the walls of the octagonal cellar with bottles for drinking, not for collecting dust.
  • Mechanical Room – this room contains the main boiler for the house as well as the primary electrical panel. It is usually locked. George has the key to the room, and the house master key held by both Thomas and Bedelia can open this door as well.
